CHAPTER 22

“HE’LL BE HERE AS SOON AS HE CAN,” I said, putting my phone on the coffee table. “The trains just started running again.”

“I still can’t believe this is happening,” Bridgett said, joining us in the living room after getting dressed. She sat down, fascinated by the news report showing a crowded train station in Tokyo.

Our phones all chimed again in harmony. Skye had her phone in her hand, so she was the first to see the message from Nishimura. “Class is canceled,” she announced.

“Not like we were going anyway.” Terra chuckled.

“We weren’t?” Amaya asked.

“I think there are more important matters,” Bridgett said.

“You’re right.” Amaya blushed and turned her attention to Haru, who had dropped a toy at her feet. Amaya picked it up and threw it out into the entryway. Haru took off after it as fast as her kitten energy could carry her.

“Glad she’s doing better,” I said, smiling at her cuteness.

“So, we’re thinking reincarnation right now? Or maybe post-incarnation?” Amaya asked.

“Post-incarnation? I like that. And yes, we are,” I said.

“If we assume that your ‘read’ing powers and the powers the Earth Maiden has are the same. Then that could explain why I’ve always loved the ocean and sea animals.”

“And why I’ve always loved fire,” Bridgett added.

“And why I always loved, what? Breathing?” Skye clicked her tongue.

“Your name is literally Skye,” Terra said, laughing.

Skye grabbed the pillow from the mattress and threw it at Terra, hitting her.

“What! Your slippers have clouds on them!” Terra threw the pillow back at Skye.

“So? Yours has cherry blossoms!” Skye countered.

“The princess loves cherry blossoms,” I said.

Terra blushed as she looked at her slippers. A bit of sorrow brushed against the wall holding their emotions back.

My phone chimed, and I quickly opened the message from Kurenai. “He’s on a train now,” I reported.

“Anyone else need a cuppa?” Skye stood and stretched.

“I’d love one,” Bridgett said.

“How about coffee?” Terra asked.

“You'll have to handle that,” Skye replied.

“Coffee?” Terra asked, looking at me then Amaya.

“Yes, please.” Amaya said, and I simply nodded.

Terra ran off into the kitchen after Skye.

“Are you doing okay?” Amaya asked me. Her worry gently brushed against the wall.

“Yes, but nervous about seeing Kurenai.”

“What are you nervous about?” she asked me.

“Him knowing the truth,” I answered.

“The truth about?” Amaya gently pushed.

“Me…” I couldn’t bring myself to say that I wasn’t the one he really loves, so I said, “My ‘read’ing powers.”

“When I was a keiki on the big island, I was in this foster home. The aunties at the home were very nice but the other keiki... not so much. The house was near the ocean, and I loved it. We’d go to eat lunch on the beach almost every day. I usually got teased a lot because I’d rather stare at the ocean instead of playing with the other keiki. One day, I was sitting away from everyone eating some Spam musubi that the aunties made.”

“That sounds so good right now. I never thought I’d miss those.” I chuckled.

“What is Spam musubi?” Bridgett asked.
